BULLETIN MASTER v2.0
COPYRIGHT 1993
PRECISION DATA PROCESSING
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
DESCRIPTION
Bulletin Master was developed to help organizations in
distributing information to its employees. When used
in a networked environment the LAN administrator or any
other designated individual can create information
bulletins for users to see when they logon to the network.
Bulletin master makes use of function keys and a mouse if
one is available.
INSTALLATION
Go to the directory where you want to install Bulletin
Master.
At the DOS prompt type: COPY A:*.* (or B:*.*)
This will copy all the files from the floppy to your hard
disk or network drive.
**NOTE: If you have a previous version of Bulletin Master
make a copy of your BMDATA.DAT file. This install
will copy over your existing version.
HOW TO USE
Your PC must have at least 350K of RAM free to run this
program.
To run Bulletin Master at the DOS prompt type: BULLMAST
Bulletin Master then reads the BMDATA.DAT file to determine
what files and bulletin titles to display.
The user can press F1 at any time to get context sensitive
help.
The Up/Down arrow keys can be used to select a bulletin, and
pressing ENTER will display it. You may also double click
on the selection with a mouse. While viewing a bulletin
you use the Up/Down arrow keys, or the PgDn/PgUp keys to scroll.
Press ESC to return to the list of available topics. You can
use a mouse with the scroll bar and clicking on the square in
the upper left corner of the window will close it. You can use
the mouse to click on the functions listed across the bottom of
the screen too.
If while viewing the list of available topics you press ESC, the
topics will disappear. To make them visible again press ALT-B.
While you are viewing a bulletin, pressing F3 will print it on
LPT1. When using on a network make sure users have a physical
printer attached or have a network printer assigned to LPT1.
To Quit Bulletin Master from wherever you are, press ALT-X.
SETTING UP BMDATA.DAT
The BMDATA.DAT file is made up of records containing a filename,
a prompt, a date function and two date parameters. ALL 5
parameters must be entered.
Place a comma between each field.
The first 1-40 characters are the name (and path if necessary) of
the file that contains the text of the bulletin to be displayed.
The next 1-55 characters make up the prompt the user will see
when making selections.
The third field is R - for range of dates to display bulletin
The fourth field is the date to begin displaying this bulletin
selection on the menu. It is entered in the format: yymmdd
The fifth field is the last day to display this bulletin
selection on the menu. It is entered in the format: yymmdd
Examples: Assume a filename of BULLETIN.DOC and a title
for each entry as COMPANY PICNIC ON AUGUST 21.
BULLETIN.DOC,COMPANY PICNIC ON AUGUST 21,R,930705,930821
This entry would begin displaying the document on
July 5, 1993 and would stop displaying on August 22.
You may have as many entries in this file as you want, however,
only 20 may be actively displayed at one time.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT LEAVE ANY BLANK LINES AFTER YOUR LAST ENTRY.
You are not required to use the filename BMDATA.DAT anymore.
You may now have multiple data files and by entering upto 40
characters for the name and path of the file after BULLMAST
on the command line, it will be used instead of the default
file BMDATA.DAT. If you choose to use the file BMDATA.DAT,
it is an optional parameter following BULLMAST.
Example: Suppose you want to put different types of bulletins
together so you create two different data files. The
first one is called BMDATA.DAT and contains general
information for everyone to see. The second one is
called ACCOUNT.DAT and contains information for just
the accounting department. To invoke Bulletin Master
and the BMDATA.DAT bulletin selections, type
BULLMAST BMDATA.DAT or BULLMAST at the command line.
To invoke Bulletin Master and the ACCOUNT.DAT bulletin
selections, type BULLMAST ACCOUNT.DAT at the command
line.
SETTING UP BMMSG.DAT
You may define two title lines that will appear at the top of
each screen. Each line may be 50 characters long.
LIMITATIONS
Lines longer than 132 characters will wrap to the next line.
Your bulletins may not exceed 1000 lines in length.

VERSION ENHANCEMENTS
1.1 - BMDATA.DAT now allows comma delimited entries instead
of the original fixed length records.
Text files are now limited to 150 lines instead of 100.
1.2 - BMMSG.DAT allows the definition of two title lines.
1.3 - Now you can define when you want your entries to appear
on the selection menu.
Text files have been expanded to 300 lines instead of 150.
You can now specify a data file name on the command line.
This means you can now have many data files each with
their own sets of bulletin selections.
1.4 - You can now print the document currently being viewed.
2.0 - Documents may now be 132 characters wide and 1000 lines
long.
Memory requirements have increased to 350K due to the
above two changes.
Filenames have been extended to 40 characters so that
the data files do not have to reside in the same directory
as the BULLMAST executable.
